Sonu Nigam



Sonu was born on 30 July 1973 to Agam Kumar and Shobha Nigam in Faridabad town of Haryana. He has 2 sisters Meenal and Nikita. He did his schooling from J. D. Tytler School in Delhi and pursued his graduation from Delhi University. He moved to Mumbai in 1990 aspiring to be a playback singer. Sonu Nigam is the most talented and versatile singer present in India. Sonu had sung hundreds of song in most of films. He has also sung many songs in other languages including Oriya’ Tamil’ Assamese’ Punjabi’ Bengali’ Malayalam Marathi’ Telugu and Nepali movies. His father Agam Kumar Nigam was also a singer and Sonu mother Shobha Nigam was also a singer. He has 2 younger sisters. Sonu started singing at the age of 4 when he joined his father Agam Kumar Nigam on stage to sing Mohammed Rafi’s song Kya Hua Tera Vaada WO Kasam WO Irada. Sonu accompanied his father on his singing appearances at weddings and parties. It was his first stage performance which earned him a lot of praise. He moved to Mumbai with his father to begin his Bollywood singing career at the age of 18. He was trained by Hindustani classical singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Sonu Nigam married Madhurima Banerjee on 15 February 2002. Sonu Nigam belongs to the Kayastha Brahmin clan. His mother was a Garhwali woman. They had a love marriage during their times. Theirs was a love marriage. Hence in matters where the heart rules over the mind there is no question of an ideal man or woman. Sonu was also involved in an affair with his future wife Madhurima a Bengali woman. They had a courtship for a couple of years before taking the 7 vows on 15 February 2002. The couple has a son Nevaan born on 27 July 2007. Sonu is forever on musical assignments and spiritual tours all over the country throughout the year. He has huge fan following in India as well as overseas. His son Nevaan has started singing when he was just 2 years of age. Apart from a melodious voice Sonu is also blessed with sublime good looks. He has featured in movies like Jaani Dushman’ Ek Anokhi Kahani 2002 Kash Aap Hamare Hote 2003 and Love in Nepal 2004. These movies did not fare well at the box office and Sonu did not pursue acting further. Sonu Nigam is relatively new in the role of a music composer and has composed music of several tracks in mainstream Bollywood movies like Singh Saab the Great 2013 Jal 2014 Happy Anniversary 2016 and Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho 2016. Sonu Nigam has had 29 nominations of which he has won 15. He has bagged prestigious awards like Film Fare, Zee Cine Awards and National Film Awards. He won maximum number of awards for Best Playback Singer Male for the title track of film Kal Ho Na Ho. A list of his nomination and awards may be found awards. Sonu got his first break for playback singing in a movie Janam in 1990 but unfortunately the movie wasn’t released. He put a lot of faith in the contract from T-series but was upset when his songs were rejected in favor of S. P. Balasubramaniam. Impressed by his talent, T-series owner, Gulshan Kumar offered him a singing contract for his upcoming project Bewafa Sanam. The song Achha Sila Diya Tune became a huge hit and people started sitting up and take notice of this talented singer. At the beginning of his career Sonu hosted the singing competition show SA Re Ga Ma in 1995 which made him a household name. Since then he has appeared in many reality television shows as a judge. He has appeared in Indian Idol seasons 1’ 2’ 3’ 4’ 7 Amul STAR Voice of India seasons 1’ 2 Chhote Ustad and X -Factor India. Sonu Nigam also appeared on a radio show on Radio City 91 FM known as Life Ki Dhun. The singer attracted controversy when he complained against the use of loudspeakers for religious purposes on April 17. His tweets were seen as insensitive and even prompted a cleric to announce an Rs 10 lakh reward for anyone who could shave Sonu head and garland him with shoes.
