Oonion Vegetable




The onion also known as the bulb onion or common onion is a vegetable and is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium. Its close relatives include the garlic’ shallot’ leek’ chive and Chinese onion. The onion plant has a fan of hollow bluish green leaves and its bulb at the base of the plant begins to swell when a certain day length is reached. The bulbs are composed of shortened compressed underground stems surrounded by fleshy modified scale leaves that envelop a central bud at the tip of the stem. In the autumn the foliage dies down and the outer layers of the bulb become dry and brittle. The crop is harvested and dried and the onions are ready for use or storage. The crop is prone to attack by a number of pests and diseases particularly the onion fly the onion eelworm and various fungi because rotting. Some varieties of A. cepa such as shallots and potato onions produce multiple bulbs. Common onions are normally available in three colour varieties. Yellow or brown onions are full flavored and are the onions of choice for everyday use. Yellow onions turn a rich dark brown when caramelized and give French onion soup its sweet flavour. The red onion is a good choice for fresh use when its colour livens up the dish it is also used in grilling. White onions are the traditional onions used in classic Mexican cuisine they have a golden colour when cooked and a particularly sweet flavour when sautéed. The photochemical in onions that scavenge free radicals may also reduce your risk of developing gastric ulcers according to the National Onion Association. The chromium in onions assists in regulating blood sugar. The sulfur in onions helps lower blood sugar by triggering increased insulin production. It is a powerful antiseptic that protects your skin from acne causing bacteria and other skin infections. Onions can be used in the treatment of acne and pimples. For this purpose you can mix 1 tablespoon of onion juice or extract with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and apply it on your face. This may reduce blood pressure inhibit platelet clot formation and help decrease the risk of coronary artery disease peripheral vascular diseases and stroke. The quartering in onions is also beneficial offering both antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties that may boost heart health. Onion is considered a super food. It can also help in weight loss. Onion is a rich source of quartering a type of antioxidant flavonoid that helps in boosting metabolism of fats. It helps in activating enzymes essential for breaking down fats. If you have a bald spot on your scalp then the best way to get rid of it by applying onion juice on the bald spot. Mix onion juice along with castor oil and let it stay overnight. In the morning, shampoo using your regular shampoo. If you have grey hair apply red onion paste on your hair regularly. · Peel the onions and chop them into small pieces. Squeeze the juice out.
