Any child male or female whose has no father or whose father has
died and the child has not reached the age of understanding or marriage +/- 18
years will be classified as a yateem or an orphan. An orphan is
someone who has lost both parents. We think of sad little children when we
think of orphans but anyone
whose parents have both died is an orphan.
In our society an orphan is seen from an eye of hatred and is thought as weak
and inferior. As Islam is the kindest and just of all religions it forbids us to
do so. It is the right of a child to be protected’ taken care of physically’
psychologically and emotionally. And these rights don’t change when they become
orphans. A home for orphans is no substitute for a house
with loving parents even if they adopte an orphaned child is confronted
by poverty and has a weak position in society. A minor child in such a
compromised set of circumstances possesses nothing not even the knowledge of
how to cope. A child does not have the experience and life skills to make it on
his or her own. When such a child reaches the age of majority and we can define
that as the time when the person acquires the ability to manage properly
whatever money he or she might possess or come into possession of then the
person ceases to be an orphan as defined by Islamic Law. The term orphan can
apply figuratively to an adult by way or referring to a person with reference
to what that person used to be. The orphan who is distressed by the death of
his father before tasting the sweetness of fatherhood and before feeling the
protection of this strong hand. The kind heart. The orphan is the neediest to
righteousness and charity. He has lost his father while he mostly needed him so
he needs righteousness and charity. If you see a man who is merciful to orphans
you should know that he is of noble natures and good moralities. Do you like
your heart to be soft and you meet your needs. Be merciful to an orphan. Rub
his head and feed him from your food your heart will be soft and you will meet
your needs. The one who is merciful to an orphan has replaced his father. A
father is naturally merciful and compassionate for his children. And he who is
merciful to an orphan has acquired an additional character which is being
merciful to someone who is not his offspring You see the believers as regards
their being merciful among themselves and showing love among themselves and
being kind as resembling one body that if any part of the body is not well then
the whole body shares the sleeplessness and fever with it. It is not difficult
to join an orphan to your home to feed him from what you eat’ dress him from
what you wear and to make him as one of your children. Believers meticulously
observe this command. Their conscience and understanding of humanity entail the
protection of orphans who need help and care and the meeting of all their
spiritual and material needs. Believers never oppress orphans expect them to
appreciate their kindness or strive to obtain any material or spiritual
benefits from them. On the contrary they protect their rights and adopt the
best possible attitude. Their strong sense of what is right, their profound
fear of Allah and their compassion account for this meticulousness.
