A hotspot is
a physical location where people may obtain Internet access typically using
Wi-Fi technology via a wireless local area network WLAN using a router
connected to an internet service provider. Public hotspots may be created by a
business for use by customers such as coffee shops or hotels. Public hotspots
are typically created from wireless access points configured to provide
Internet access controlled to some degree by the venue. In its simplest form
venues that have broadband Internet access can create public wireless access by
configuring an access point AP in conjunction with a router and connecting the
AP to the Internet connection. A single wireless router combining these
functions may suffice. Private hotspots may be configured on a smart
phone or tablet with a mobile network data plan to allow Internet access to an
other devices via Bluetooth pairing or if both the hotspot device and the
device accessing it are connected to the same WiFi network. The public can use
a laptop or other suitable portable device to access the wireless connection usually
WiFi provided. Of the estimated 150 million laptops 14 million PDAs and other
emerging WiFi devices sold per year for the last few years most include the WiFi
feature. In order to provide robust security to hotspot users the WiFi Alliance is developing a
new hotspot program that aims to encrypt hotspot traffic with WPA2 security.
The program was scheduled to launch in the first half of 2012. The
easiest way to understand WiFi is to consider an average home or business since
most of them support WiFi access. The main requirement for WiFi is that there's
a device that can transmit the wireless signal like a router phone or computer.
There are tons of places to get free WiFi access like in restaurants and hotels
but WiFi isn't free just because it's WiFi. What determines the cost is whether
or not the service has a data cap. If you want to set up your own WiFi at home
you need a wireless router and access to the router's admin management pages to
configure the right settings like the WiFi channel password, network name etc. With a mobile hotspot,
you can create an Internet connection for up to five mobile devices on a 3G phone and up to 10 on
a 4G LTE smart phone. After a few quick steps the phone creates its own secure WiFi network which your devices can join. You can change the
name of your phone's WiFi
network name SSID and secure its WiFi network when it's acting as a portable hotspot. Go to Settings Wireless &
networks More Tethering & portable hotspot.
Put simply a portable hotspot taps into 3G and or 4G cellular networks just like a smart
phone does and then wirelessly
shares its data connection with other nearby within 30 feet or so WiFi enabled
gadgets typically between three and 8 or more at a time depending on the device
and the carrier. Since it is against their TOS no
native Straight Talk phones have
a hotspot option. Yes it is
possible. It is against TOS. If you tether to a laptop & do a lot of
surfing it uses more data than a mobile browser would use. Unlimited 4G LTE plans include unlimited high speed data. Other plans include unlimited data with a set amount of high speed data speeds will be
reduced once data limits are reached. Hotspot
Data tethering is only allowed on plans
and devices with hotspot
capability.
